We are very glad we came out a day or two early. We arrived in Astoria about 6:00 PM Friday evening. Our nephew PD and family met us at the Portland airport and we had a pleasant drive up to Astoria. We enjoyed a super supper with them before they headed back to Portland (hoping 4 1/2 year old Serena would sleep) while we walked back to the hotel and had a great sleep.
After breakfast this morning we got our bikes from storage and pumped the tires and decided to “test them out.” Chris & Will at Bicycle World did a wonderful job of putting up with our regular stops into their shop for upgrades and adjustments. We think it paid off. Our bikes were great.
An ABA staff member sent us on a short, but memorable ride…up a 14% incline (STEEP) to the Astoria Column. A beautiful monument to Lewis & Clark and the Columbia River. We climber the 164 stairs and were rewarded with a beautiful view of the mouth of the Columbia River and it’s tributaries. It was too hazy to see Mt Rainier or Mt St Helens but worth the trip. After lunch, we got our bikes and helmets checked (Bob had to go buy a new one – crack) but we had fun walking in and out of town on the trolley/bike path.
We are off to supper and a big sleep with no alarms. Tomorrow … the Pacific!
